The honest 2026 lawn mower buyer's guide.

How to choose a lawn mower in 2026

Here's the honest truth: most blog posts about lawn mowers are written to sell you the most expensive thing. We're going to do the opposite. The right mower depends on three things - yard size, grass type, and slope. Get those right and the rest sorts itself.

If your yard is under 200m² and flat, a push mower is plenty. If it's bigger or has a slope, get a self-propelled. If you've got an acre or more, look at a ride-on. That's it.

Push vs self-propelled vs ride-on

Push mowers are cheaper, lighter, and easier to maintain. Great for small flat yards. You provide the muscle.

Self-propelled mowers have a drive system that pulls the mower forward. Game-changer on slopes and bigger yards. You walk behind it, but you're not pushing 30+ kg uphill.

Ride-on mowers are for serious acreage - half an acre and up. Modern electric ride-ons (like our 36" 48V brushless) are quiet, clean, and don't need petrol or oil changes.

What engine size do you need?

Engine size is measured in cc (cubic centimetres). Bigger isn't always better, but here's the rough guide:

  • 139cc - fine for thin grass, small flat yards.
  • 150cc - the sweet spot for most Aussie suburban lawns.
  • 175–224cc - for thick buffalo, large yards, or when you want extra grunt.
  • 248cc+ - heavy-duty work, commercial use, or genuinely tough conditions.

Petrol vs electric: pros and cons

Petrol still wins on raw power and runtime. Electric (battery) is quieter, lower-maintenance, and cleaner - but battery mowers under $1500 generally aren't powerful enough for thick Aussie grass yet. The exception: 48V brushless ride-ons, which are excellent.

Specs that actually matter (and what to ignore)

Matter: engine cc, cutting width, deck material (steel beats plastic), self-propelled or not, catcher capacity.

Ignore: "premium ergonomic handle technology", "advanced cutting system" with no specs behind it, fancy paint colours.

Best mowers for buffalo grass

Buffalo is thick. You want at least 150cc and a self-propelled drive. Our top pick: the 18" Self-Propelled 150cc - handles buffalo, kikuyu and couch without breaking a sweat.

Budget guide

$500–$700: Compact push, small flat yards. Try the 16" Compact 139cc.

$800–$1000: Bigger push or entry self-propelled. Sweet spot for most homeowners.

$1000–$1500: Premium self-propelled with electric start. Set-and-forget for years.

$5000+: Electric ride-on territory. For acreage owners.
